LifeMates - Are you being Realistic?matchme

chickflicks How many of us have truly taken an inventory of being?

What makes you happy? What do you need more of? When your needs are taken care of, what do you want next? Well, for some people, the next step is to take care of the relationship part of their lives.

Once decided, opening the flood-gates on the dating world makes you vulnerable to finding a rebound relationship. It’s time for a plan...

Who and what will make you happy? And are you being realistic? Let’s start with some basics. Age is one of the first things society uses as a filter. Ladies, you’ve embraced the revolution and are more open to dating younger men than ever before. Unfortunately, most men are late to this party. Wishful thinking says: “I need a man who can keep up to me”, “most people I know tell me I look 5 years younger”. All of this could even be true! However, reality says that most men want to date a woman that is a little bit younger and a little bit shorter. Most women prefer to date a man that is a little bit older and a little bit taller.

The same principles apply to you men out there. You may want to meet a woman 15 years younger, but remember you’ve got to be patient enough to wait for a woman that wants to date a man 15 years older.  When it comes to a person’s body frame, it is always best to start by saying you will date someone similar to yourself! You may find bigger frames or smaller frames attractive as well, but why eliminate options? We can then move on to the lifestyle choices: Smoking, kids, income and career. Wishful thinking says you want a non-smoker, with no kids, independently wealthy and has a great job. The reality is that a non-smoker is easy to find provided you don’t smoke. All smokers say they are trying to quit, but in the meantime, are they considerate smokers or chain smokers? There can be a difference.

Same goes for the children question; don’t be a hypocrite! If you have kids, be open to the fact that they have kids. Hopefully your relationship will last long enough for them to grow up and be more independent. Lifestyle is associated with income. It may be fantastic if you have a well-paying job and want to meet someone similar, but realistically, the average household income in Canada is just under $64,000 per year- and saying you only want to meet people that earn over $100k per year eliminates 90% of the country. So be patient if that is what you need.

When trying to define what it is you want in a partner it’s far too easy to create a list composed of what you don’t want. In the end, try staying focussed on the important values, attitudes and goals that you need to add to your already full life. Staying realistic makes the whole dating process more enjoyable simply because you eliminate opportunities for disappointment and increase chances for pleasant surprises.

Matchmaker Tip of the Month

polaroidb 2It is always important to remember not to rule anyone out after only having one telephone conversation. People are usually nervous and just touching the surface. Keep in mind you came to LifeMates to get out there and it is important to get dressed up and go on a date if for nothing more than the dating experience. As well, the person may not be what your looking for in personality but may be the perfect match in looks! We will need this feedback for future matches. It is best not to pre-judge or assume. Be fair to yourself as we never know who will be our prefect match.
